Goshun was certainly a student of Ōkyo, but the great master recognized that, among all his notable students, it was Goshun who possessed the skill and character necessary to carry on his legacy into the 19th century. Goshun, together with his half-brother Keibun, went on to found the Shijō School, which became the standard for Japanese painting in Kyoto and served as a benchmark for classical art well into the 20th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eThis painting has a casual character - it is certainly not a weighty composition. But the calligraphic poem by Shibayama Mochitoyo justifies this approach: “Solitude, Autumn Melancholy” is the theme, and that requires no grandiose staging. The fields have been harvested - the scarecrow stands there alone.\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eThe painting captivates with its precision - there are only a few strokes, and not a single one is superfluous. The scarecrow does not stand on two legs, but on a simple stick, and wears a hat that sits on no head (however sparsely suggested). This absence of a human figure underscores the desolation. Typical of the subtle humor often found in Goshun’s work is the elegance of the arch; it doesn’t really fit the shabbily cobbled-together figure, which can hardly scare away a bird anymore.
